Aloha e Kahaluʻu Ward Family,

With all the storms passing near or through our islands this hurricane season, itʻs in our best interest to be prepared before any emergencies arrive. Like many of you, I recently started preparing or double checking our preparations. After sitting in the dark during the latest black out, we decided it was time to pick up a new generator. We ordered it, it came in, and I felt like I was ahead of the game for the next blackout.

But during the morning of the next storm came the realization that I didn't buy any fuel. I had to rush out last-minute to the Shell station to hunt down some ethanol-free gas. I made it work, but standing in line with my gas cans, I couldn’t help but shake my head and think of the story of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:

“They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”

— Matthew 25:3–4

In the parable, the foolish virgins couldn’t borrow oil when the bridegroom arrived at midnight; it had to be gathered beforehand, drop by drop. In October 2023 General Conference, Sister Amy A. Wright pointed out that when life's hardest moments strike, it's too late to suddenly scramble for oil. She reminded us: “We cannot share our oil, but we can share His light. Oil in our lamps will not only help us ‘abide the day’ but can also be the means of illuminating the path that leads those we love to the Savior.”

While I managed a last-minute gas run for my generator, that's not possible for my spiritual well-being. Taking oil, comes from the quiet, everyday habit of turning our hearts back to the Savior, repenting, and trying to do better each day.

The honest truth is, we all struggle, I certainly do. I feel that inadequacy in my own callings, and there are plenty of times I feel like I'm running on fumes or scrambling to keep up. But I am so deeply grateful for the patience and genuine love from Bishop, the bishopric, and all the congregation, whenever I fall short.

None of us are expected to be perfect disciples today. We just need to keep coming to the Savior, letting Him forgive us, and adding a few drops of oil to our lamps each day. Take care, stay safe during the rest of this hurricane season, and mahalo for being such a loving ward family.
